Quick start
Five steps from install to your first trade.
- Add SizeOps to a chart. MT4 / MT5: drag it from Navigator › Expert Advisors and turn on Algo Trading (MT4: AutoTrading). NT8: right-click the chart › Indicators › SizeOps. The NT8 panel floats on the chart by default (drag it by its header), so Chart Trader can stay closed; to put it inside Chart Trader instead, see Panel location (group 13).
- Paste your license in group 1 (Start here) and press OK. MT only: allow WebRequest for
https://sizeops.comin Tools › Options › Experts (MT4: Expert Advisors). - Press START TRADING. The SL and TP lines appear.
- Drag the SL line to where your stop belongs. The size updates live, so a stop-out is planned to lose your risk. Slippage or a gap can make the real loss bigger.
- Pick MARKET or LIMIT and press EXECUTE. Manage the trade with PT, BE, the quick-close buttons and CLOSE.
To change settings later: MT, press F7 on the chart and open the Inputs tab. NT8, right-click the chart › Indicators › SizeOps; NinjaTrader's own sections there (Data Series, Setup, Visual) can stay at their defaults.
Words used here:
- R:R: reward ÷ risk. R:R 2 means the target pays twice your planned risk.
- The % is of: what a % risk is taken from: your balance or your equity.
- Hedging / netting: MT5 account types, set by your broker. Hedging keeps each trade separate; netting merges them into one position.
- Key / pass: your license, pasted in group 1.

The panel at a glance
The settings below refer to these buttons.
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| START TRADING | Opens the panel and draws fresh SL / TP lines, starting from your settings every time. Reads CHECK LICENSE when the license needs attention. |
| _ (title bar) | Folds the panel. EXECUTE folds it too. |
| Risk − / + | Changes the risk: Risk % or, with Risk in $, Risk $ (group 2). Step and floor are in group 6. |
| R : R − / + | Moves the TP. Also re-locks a TP you dragged by hand. |
| BUY | SELL | A two-part switch: tap a side to pick it. The chosen side is outlined in blue (BUY) or amber (SELL), the other is dim. Shows with Buy or sell = Manual or with Fixed distance (group 5). |
| MARKET / LIMIT | Trade now, or a pending order at the entry line. In LIMIT, SizeOps picks limit or stop from where the line sits. |
| PARTIALS | Opens the partials window for this setup; the button shows how many levels are on (group 7). |
| BE LINE | Switches the BE line on or off for this trade (group 8). |
| EXECUTE | Sends the trade with its SL, TP and plan. |
| TRADE | With 2+ trades: picks which one PT, BE, the quick-close buttons and CLOSE act on. |
| PT | Opens the partials window: up to 5 levels, each with % and R:R − / +, on / off and remove. |
| BE | Opens the breakeven window: BE NOW, BE LINE, ACTIVATE. |
| 25% / 50% | Quick-close that share of each SizeOps trade (group 6). |
| CLOSE | Closes SizeOps trades and their pending orders on this symbol. Never touches your manual trades. |
| CANCEL n PENDING | Cancels SizeOps pending orders on this symbol. |
- The +/− buttons change risk or R:R for your next trade only. After you press EXECUTE, your defaults come back. A refused EXECUTE keeps them, so you can fix it and try again. A restart, timeframe or settings change brings the defaults back too.
- Every START TRADING starts fresh from your settings: risk and R:R (any +/− forgotten), a new stop (Fixed distance: your distance), the target on R:R, the side (Start as), the order type, Plan partials with your Partial 1–5 levels, and the BE line with its R:R. A LIMIT entry line starts at the last candle's close. Open trades and waiting orders (with their partial levels and BE lines, also right after EXECUTE), the daily limit and where the panel sits stay as they are.
- R : R (moved): you dragged the TP by hand; R : R − / + locks it back.
- Amber size row: the size was cut or can't be traded: (margin), (max), ! margin too low, risk too small (NT8 also: ! no free margin, 0 (max position)).
- NT8: SizeOps also writes the size into Chart Trader's quantity box.
- NT8 pending entries: a LIMIT or STOP entry gets its stop, target and partials when it fills, and only while NinjaTrader runs with SizeOps on the chart. Don't close NinjaTrader with an entry waiting.
Daily loss limit: how it works
How the daily loss limit in settings group 3 works.
- What counts: today's closed P&L plus the open P&L of every trade on the account, manual trades and other EAs' included.
- Used up: when that loss reaches the limit, the account is locked for the rest of the day. Pressing EXECUTE shows DONE FOR TODAY and the Daily Limit row reads [LOCKED]. The lock survives a restart.
- Pending entries: once today's limit is used up, SizeOps cancels its own pending entries on that chart's symbol, including every leg of a split entry (MT). Your manual orders and other EAs' orders are left alone. NT8 does this only on the account that hit its limit. It also happens when SizeOps starts on a day that's already locked. The log (MT: Experts tab; NT8: NinjaScript Output) says "Daily limit used up: cancelled N SizeOps pending entries". With "At the limit: also close open trades" on, the close cancels them instead. If an entry has already part-filled, the filled part is a running trade and stays; the rest is cancelled.
- Running trades: never closed by the limit, unless "At the limit: also close open trades" is on. Then, when the limit is hit, SizeOps also closes its own trades on that chart's symbol, once (not again after a restart; NT8: only on the account that hit its limit). Manual trades are never closed.
- Before each trade: SizeOps refuses a trade whose risk is bigger than what's left of today's limit (OVER TODAY'S LIMIT). Here SizeOps counts open trades at their stops where it can: MT counts every open position on the account at its stop, and one without a stop at its current P&L. NT8 counts SizeOps' own trades on the chart's instrument at their stops, plus other open positions on that account at their current P&L. Risk in % or $ makes no difference: it's the real size's risk that's checked.
- Waiting entries keep fitting: SizeOps keeps checking its waiting entries with the same check as a new trade, and if one would no longer fit what's left today, it cancels all of its waiting entries (MT: on that chart's symbol; NT8: that chart's, on that account). Each entry counts on its own: a split entry's legs together, and of a buy + sell pair only one side can fill. An exact fit stays. It checks about every 2 s and right after SizeOps starts. The log says "Daily limit: a waiting entry no longer fits what's left today ($… at its stop, $… left), cancelled N SizeOps pending entries". No popup, and nothing comes back later. An entry with no stop can't be checked.
- Starting balance: your balance minus today's closed P&L. Deposits and withdrawals aren't trading P&L, so one made today counts as if it was made before the day started: on MT from the next time SizeOps starts (attach, restart, timeframe or settings change), on NT8 right away.
- The day: starts at broker server midnight on MT and 18:00 New York on NT8. A new day unlocks trading; cancelled entries aren't put back.
To plan the day's room before you trade, use the free drawdown calculator.
MT5 netting accounts
MT5 accounts come in two kinds: hedging keeps each trade separate, netting keeps one position per symbol. The MT5 title bar shows which: "Hedge" or "Netting".
- SizeOps only trades a symbol with no position, or a position it opened itself. On netting, a new trade would merge into the position already there.
- A position SizeOps didn't open: EXECUTE shows MANUAL TRADE OPEN and sends nothing. SizeOps' own entries still waiting on that symbol are cancelled, since a fill would merge into it. Your manual orders stay.
- Closing part of a SizeOps trade by hand is fine: SizeOps keeps managing the rest.
- An EXECUTE the other way while SizeOps' position is open, or its entry is waiting, is refused (OTHER SIDE OPEN), since it would reduce or flip it: close or cancel it first. So no buy + sell entry pairs on netting. The same direction adds to it as before.
- Adding to a SizeOps trade, or flipping it to the other side (by hand or another EA): that hands the position back to you. SizeOps stops managing it: no BE, partials, CLOSE or daily-limit close on it, and its lines go. One alert tells you. Check its stop and target.
- Hedging accounts, MT4 and NT8 work as before.
Settings
The numbers match the groups in the SizeOps settings window.
1. Start here
Your license, and on NT8 the account SizeOps trades.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| License key (NT8: License) | Blank | Paste your SIZE- key from your account page. Upper or lower case, spaces or missing dashes are fine. Then press OK. Once accepted it's saved for this account and you can clear the field. Your key is the same on every platform. A pass works on the platform it was made for. |
| Trading account (NT8 only) | Follow Chart Trader | The account SizeOps trades. Follow Chart Trader uses Chart Trader's account (with Chart Trader off: your first real account, else the simulation account). Pick a named account to pin it; if it isn't connected, new trades are blocked (NO ACCOUNT). SizeOps never switches to another account. On MT it trades the account the terminal is logged in to. |
- Your account must be on your license: your MT account number, or your exact NT8 account name. Manage your accounts on sizeops.com.
- MT only: allow WebRequest for
https://sizeops.comin Tools › Options › Experts (MT4: Expert Advisors). Without it the panel says WebRequest blocked (hover it for where). NT8 needs no setup, just internet. - A mistyped key blocks new trades, even with a saved license. SizeOps spots a mistyped SIZE- key itself (Invalid key – paste it exactly as emailed). Fix it or clear the field.
- Which key is in use? Hover the panel title: Key: SIZE-E7K2-••••-•••• (the rest stays hidden).
- Fixed it on sizeops.com? After License paused, Trial ended, License ended, Account not on license, Trial already used or a platform that isn't on your key yet, SizeOps checks again every 15 minutes (hourly after a day). Paying, buying or sorting out your accounts unblocks new trades with no click; CHECK LICENSE checks at once.
- Offline? You'll see Can't reach sizeops.com – OK until {date} (MT: hover the panel title; NT8: under the panel). New trades stay allowed until then.
What the panel title tells you:
| Title | Meaning |
|---|---|
| SizeOps | All good. |
| SizeOps (Trial Nd) | Trial, N days left. |
| SizeOps (!) | A problem. MT: the reason in short under CHECK LICENSE, the whole text when you hover the title (or that line); NT8: the reason shows under the panel. START TRADING becomes CHECK LICENSE: press it to check again. Open trades can still be managed. |
2. Risk per trade
These decide how big each trade is: SizeOps sizes every trade so that at the stop you lose your planned risk. Fast markets, slippage or gaps can make it more.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Risk in: % or $ | % | %: risk a % of your balance or equity (next setting). $: risk a set amount per trade, in your account currency. The size maths is the same either way, commission included. |
| The % is of: Balance or Equity | Balance | Balance, or Equity (including open P&L). NT8 reads Cash Value and Net Liquidation. With Risk in $, it's what the % shown next to your $ risk is of. Settings saved with the old "Fixed capital" setting load as Balance; the log says so once. |
| Risk per trade (%) | 1.0 | Your default risk with Risk in %: what a stop-out is planned to cost, as a % of "The % is of". The size is always rounded down, never up. |
| Risk per trade ($) | 100 | Your default risk with Risk in $: what a stop-out is planned to cost, in your account currency, commission included. The size is rounded down, never up. |
| Target R:R (risk : reward), e.g. 2 = twice your risk | 1.0 | Your default target: where the TP goes. R:R 2: the TP pays twice your planned risk, both after commission (group 4). With commission off, that's simply twice the stop distance. |
| Not enough margin: trade smaller (off = skip it) | On | On: if the size needs more margin than you have free, SizeOps trades the most that fits and marks it (margin). Off: it refuses the trade (MARGIN TOO LOW). Either way SizeOps won't send a size that needs more than your free margin. |
| Margin per contract ($), 0 = NinjaTrader's (NT8 only) | 0 | 0: SizeOps uses NinjaTrader's margin for the instrument. A value here is used only when NinjaTrader has none (e.g. a simulation account), so the margin check still works. |
| Max contracts per trade (0 = no limit) (NT8 only) | 0 | Your per-trade cap. NinjaTrader's own limits still apply. A capped size shows (max). |
- Your defaults: The +/− buttons change risk or R:R for your next trade only. After you press EXECUTE, your defaults come back.
- Risk in $ on the panel: the − / + row shows your $ risk and steps in $ (group 6); the row under it shows what that is as a % of "The % is of". The stop-line label shows both.
- The daily loss limit stays a % of balance, whichever you pick here (group 3).
3. Daily loss limit
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Daily loss limit (% of balance, 0 = off) | 0 (off) | Blocks new trades for the rest of the day once today's loss reaches this % of the day's starting balance, and cancels SizeOps' own pending entries on the chart's symbol. Also refuses a trade whose risk is bigger than what's left (OVER TODAY'S LIMIT), and cancels SizeOps' waiting entries as soon as one no longer fits. |
| At the limit: also close open trades (off = keep them) | Off | Off: open trades stay open, with their stops. On: when the limit is hit, SizeOps also closes its own open trades on this chart's symbol, once (not again after a restart; NT8: only on the account that hit its limit). Manual trades are never closed. |
At the limit, new trades are always blocked and SizeOps' waiting entries are always cancelled. This setting only decides about trades already open.
How the daily loss limit works: Daily loss limit: how it works.
4. Commission
Whether commission is part of the maths, and what yours is.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Commission: Auto or Manual | Auto | Auto: MT learns from your last 5 closed trades on this symbol (manual ones too); NT8 uses the account's commission template, else your last 5 fills. Manual always uses the value below. |
| Commission per lot, per side ($) (NT8: per contract) | 0 | Your commission for one side; a round trip costs twice this. Used with Manual, and by Auto until it has learned your rate. |
| Count commission in risk and target (recommended) | On | On: the size, the TP and every $ figure are after commission, so a stop-out is planned to cost your risk including fees. Off: plain price maths. |
The target is R:R × the stop distance, plus commission when it's counted: TP distance = R:R × stop + (R:R + 1) × the round-trip commission as a price move. Spread is never part of the size or the target: the entry price (Ask for a BUY, Bid for a SELL) already carries it. Settings saved with the old "Add one spread to the TP as a safety buffer" setting load fine: that setting is gone, so targets are exact R:R now (NT8 says so once in the NinjaScript Output if it was on). Breakeven always uses your real commission, whatever the "Count commission" switch says.
5. Placing a trade
How a new trade starts out.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Order type after START TRADING | Market | Market, Limit, or Last used (the type you used last; NT8 forgets it when NinjaTrader restarts). Applied at every START TRADING, also with a trade open. |
| Buy or sell: Auto or Manual | Auto | Auto: stop below price = BUY, above = SELL. Manual: the BUY | SELL switch picks the side, and the stop can't be dragged across the price (it stops 1 tick short). |
| Start as: Buy or Sell | Buy | The side the BUY | SELL switch starts on, with Buy or sell = Manual and with Fixed distance: at every START TRADING and every time SizeOps starts (a restart doesn't remember the side; a timeframe change keeps the side you picked). |
| Where the stop starts | Recent swing | Where the first SL line lands. Recent swing: just past the high / low of the last 3 candles, plus one spread. Volatility: 15% of the last 20 candles' range. Fixed distance: a set distance (next setting); the BUY | SELL switch shows by itself and picks the side. |
| Fixed distance: stop distance (points / ticks) | MT 200 points · NT8 20 ticks | Every START TRADING puts the stop this far from the entry (Ask for a buy, Bid for a sell; your entry line in LIMIT). While you set up, the stop keeps this distance and moves with the price, and the target follows by R:R. Drag the stop to change the distance for this trade; it can't be dragged across the price. Switching BUY | SELL puts it on the other side at the same distance. The next START TRADING starts at your setting again. |
- SL line: placed once and never trails; drag it wherever you want (with the BUY | SELL switch: not across the price). Fixed distance is the one exception, and only while you set up a trade: its stop moves with the price (never a trade's real stop). Folded with no trade open, the setup lines go, as in every mode.
6. Panel buttons
How far each − / + click on the panel moves, the lowest values allowed, and the quick-close buttons. The +/− buttons change risk or R:R for your next trade only. After you press EXECUTE, your defaults come back.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Risk +/- step (%) | 1.0 | How much the risk changes per click with Risk in %. The top is 100%. |
| Risk +/- step ($) | 10 | How much the risk changes per click with Risk in $. The top is 100% of "The % is of". |
| R:R +/- step | 0.5 | How much R:R changes per click (top 50). Also the step for a partial level's R:R. |
| Lowest risk allowed (%) | 1.0 | With Risk in %, the risk can't go below this, on the panel or in group 2. To risk 0.5%, lower this to 0.5 as well. |
| Lowest risk allowed ($) | 10 | With Risk in $, the risk can't go below this, on the panel or in group 2. |
| Lowest R:R allowed | 1.0 | R:R can't go below this. Also the floor for partial levels you move with − / +. |
| Quick-close button 1 / 2 (% of each trade) | 25 / 50 | The two quick-close buttons. Each closes that share of every SizeOps trade (or the one picked with TRADE), rounded down. Range 1–99. |
- Tip: a plan level set below the lowest R:R (Partial 1 at 0.5, say) stays where it is until you press its − / +, then jumps to the lowest R:R.
- Quick-close: a trade too small to split stays as it is (TOO SMALL TO SPLIT).
7. Partial take-profits
Partials close part of the trade at set R:R levels on the way to the TP, up to 5 levels per trade.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Plan partials (each one on/off in PARTIALS) | Off | On: START TRADING draws your Partial 1–5 levels with the setup, and EXECUTE sends them with the trade. PARTIALS on the panel turns each level on or off for that trade; the next START TRADING starts from this setting again. |
| Partial 1–5: at R:R (0 = off) | Partial 1 0.5, the rest 0 | Where each level sits, as R:R from entry. |
| Partial 1–5: close % of what's left | 50 each | How much of the remaining position closes there. Two levels at 50% close half, then a quarter of the original. |
| Partials you add: % of what's left (10/25/33/50/75) | 50 | The starting % for a level you add by hand (+ ADD PARTIAL). It snaps to 10, 25, 33, 50 or 75, and each level's − / + steps through those. |
- At EXECUTE: a level beyond the TP, or too small to close anything, is dropped. Its label warns you before EXECUTE, and the log says why.
- During the trade: PT opens the partials window to move, resize, add or remove levels.
- Where the levels live: MT4 and MT5 hedging accounts send levels set before EXECUTE to the broker as their own orders; levels added during the trade are closed by SizeOps at the touch. MT5 netting accounts: always at the touch. NT8 places resting limit orders once the entry fills and always keeps at least 1 contract for the TP.
8. Breakeven
BE moves your stop to entry plus a small buffer, so your stop sits at entry plus costs. A gap or slippage can still cost a little. BE NOW does it at once; a BE line does it when price gets there.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Plan a breakeven line (BE LINE switches it) | Off | On: START TRADING draws the BE line with your setup, and EXECUTE arms it for the new trade. The panel's BE LINE button switches it on or off for this trade; the next START TRADING starts from this setting again. |
| Breakeven line at (R:R) | 1.0 | Where a new BE line is drawn, as R:R from entry. Drag it anywhere after. |
| BE button: each trade's entry or the average | Each trade to its own entry | Each trade to its own entry: each stop moves to its own entry + buffer and never backwards. All trades to their average entry: every stop on that side moves to the size-weighted average entry + buffer, so the group is set to break even as a whole. |
| Breakeven covers the spread | On | Adds the current spread to the buffer. NT8 adds at least 1 tick. |
| Breakeven covers commission | On | Adds your round-trip commission to the buffer, so the BE stop covers it too. |
- BE line: drag it, then press ACTIVATE in the BE window. When price touches it, the stop moves and the line removes itself.
- No stop on the trade? BE places one at entry + buffer.
- Keep the platform running: SizeOps watches BE lines itself; the broker doesn't hold them.
- NOT IN PROFIT YET: price isn't far enough past entry + costs for the broker to accept that stop. An armed line simply waits and tries again.
9. Chart lines & labels
Which lines SizeOps draws, when, and what their labels show.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Hide lines: panel small and no trade open | On | On: the setup lines appear only after START TRADING. Off: they stay on the chart while idle (NT8 keeps sizing them live). |
| Average line for 2+ trades on one side | On | A dotted line at the average entry when 2 or more SizeOps positions are open on the same side (on MT, a trade split into partials counts as several). |
| In a trade, use MetaTrader's stop/target lines (MT4 / MT5 only) | On | On: in a trade you drag MetaTrader's own SL / TP lines and SizeOps adds its labels. Off: with the panel folded and one unsplit SizeOps trade open, SizeOps draws its own draggable SL / TP lines; otherwise MetaTrader's lines are used. |
| Draw open trades (drag stop/target to move) (NT8 only) | On | On: SizeOps draws its trades' entry, SL, TP and partial lines (dashed); drag SL or TP to move the real orders, so Chart Trader's own lines aren't needed. Off: use Chart Trader's order lines; the labels still show. |
| Stop label: lots / contracts | On | The trade size. |
| Stop label: risk % | On | What a stop-out is planned to cost, as % of "The % is of". |
| Stop label: risk $ | On | What a stop-out is planned to cost in money, including commission. |
| Target label: lots / contracts left | On | What is still open when the TP is hit, after partials. |
| Target label: R:R | On | The TP's reward-to-risk. |
| Target label: profit $ | On | What the TP pays, after commission. |
| Partial labels: lots / contracts closed | On | The size that level closes. |
| Partial labels: R:R | On | That level's reward-to-risk. |
| Partial labels: profit $ | On | What that level pays. |
| Label gap from the left edge (px) | 150 | Keeps labels off the chart's left edge (on MT, clear of its own trade captions). |
- Each label shows its line's name plus the parts you switch on, the same on MT and NT8: SL : 0.50 lot : 1.00% : $100.00, TP : 0.25 lot : RR 2.00 : +$200.00, and on partials PT1 : 50% | 0.25 lot | RR 1.00 | +$50.00 (NT8: ct). With every part off, only the name shows (on partials, the name and %).
- Waiting entries: their stop and target labels follow the same switches as every other label (and Focus mode).
- NT8, a plan too small for 1 contract: the labels show what one contract would risk or make: SL : 0 ct : 1 ct = $404.20 (4.04%), TP : 0 ct : RR 2.01 : 1 ct = +$810.80, and each partial between the entry and the TP PT1 : 50% | 0 ct | TOO SMALL | RR 1.00 | 1 ct = +$405.80. EXECUTE refuses it (RISK TOO SMALL). MT shows your planned risk on the stop instead.
- Where labels sit: one gap in from the left, side by side when they'd overlap, and around the trade box and the panel (NT8: when it floats), but never pushed off the chart for that. Chart labels are 1 pt smaller than the Text size. NT8: on a chart too narrow for the gap, a label starts further left so it fits when it can.
- R:R on labels uses the same maths as your TP: after commission when it's counted (group 4).
- Once your stop is past entry in profit, the SL label reads SL past BE, with the profit at that stop (a gap or slippage can give some back). Right at breakeven it reads SL at BE.
10. Panel info rows
Three panel rows that track your day. The daily limit works even when they're hidden.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Show daily P&L, limit and win/loss rows | On | Shows the three rows on the panel. |
| Small panel: keep daily P&L | On | Keeps today's P&L on the folded panel too. |
| Small panel: keep win/loss | On | Keeps today's wins and losses on the folded panel too. |
- Daily P&L: today's closed P&L for the whole account, after costs, manual trades included.
- Daily Limit: today's limit in money (−$500, say). Shows only on the open panel with a limit set, and reads [LOCKED] once hit.
- Win / Loss: today's closed trades, with your win %.
11. Trade box on the chart
A small box with your live trade, shown only while a SizeOps trade or pending order exists. Drag it anywhere.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Show the trade box | On | Shows the trade box. |
| Trade box: lots / contracts | On | The trade size. |
| Trade box: R:R right now | On | Your R:R right now, after commission. Single trade only. |
| Trade box: P&L | On | Live P&L. NT8 takes commission off; MT shows profit plus swap as MetaTrader reports it. |
- With 2+ trades it shows the count, total size and total P&L. A pending order shows its type, price, size and distance from price.
- Its first spot: next to the panel on MT, top-right of the chart on NT8. Wherever you drag it, it stays: NT8 saves it with the workspace; MT keeps it until a restart.
12. Focus mode
Trade the system, not the money.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Hide all $ amounts (lots / contracts, %, R:R still show) | Off | Hides every money figure on the panel, the trade box and the chart labels: Risk $, Daily P&L, Daily Limit, projected profits. Size, Risk %, R:R and Win / Loss still show. With Risk in $, the risk row still shows your $ risk, since it's the number you step. |
Refusal details in the platform's log still show amounts, so you can see why a trade was refused.
13. Panel look & size
Where the panel sits and how it looks. The panel starts folded at START TRADING, with your daily rows: when SizeOps starts and after you change a setting, also with a trade or waiting entry running. It opens only when you press START TRADING, and folds again after EXECUTE or when you fold it. Open trades keep their lines, and PT, BE and the close buttons work on the folded panel too. (MT: a timeframe change keeps it as it was.)
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Panel width (px) | MT 200 · NT8 230 | MT: try 150–260; never below 140, and MT5 scales it on high-DPI screens. The PARTIALS and BREAKEVEN windows are at least 200 px wide. NT8: used only when the panel floats (160–600). On a narrow panel, a caption that doesn't fit shows a little smaller instead of being cut. |
| Text size | 9 | Text size for the panel, the trade box and the chart labels (chart labels 1 pt smaller). MT5 adds 1–2 points on high-DPI screens. |
| Font | Consolas | Used with Colours: Cool blue or Custom (NT8: every Theme except SizeOps), and by Auto once you change it. The SizeOps look uses its own fonts: Segoe UI for words and buttons, Consolas for numbers so they stay lined up, and Bahnschrift for titles on Windows 10 and up (older Windows shows Segoe UI instead). |
| Theme: SizeOps, Auto, a skin, Cool blue or Custom (NT8 only) | SizeOps | SizeOps: the SizeOps look (panel, line colours and fonts). Cool blue: your NinjaTrader skin with cyan and orange lines. Auto matches your NinjaTrader skin (Tools › Options › General › Skin), or pick a skin by hand. Custom uses your colours from groups 15–17. Coming from an older SizeOps with Auto on a dark skin, SizeOps switches to the SizeOps look once; pick Auto again and it stays. |
| Panel location: on the chart or in Chart Trader (NT8 only) | Floating on the chart | Floating on the chart: drag it by its header; its spot is saved with the workspace, and Chart Trader can stay closed (cleaner Journal pictures). Inside Chart Trader: the panel sits under Chart Trader's controls, so Chart Trader must be showing. A saved workspace keeps the choice it has. |
After EXECUTE the panel folds back on its own.
14. Advanced: order tags (MT4 / MT5 only)
How SizeOps marks its own orders. It only ever closes, moves or part-closes its own trades.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Magic number (change only if you must) | 97402145 | How SizeOps recognises its trades. Keep the default unless another EA uses the same number, and change it only with no SizeOps trades open. |
| Max slippage (points) | 30 | The most a market order may slip. Some market-execution brokers ignore it. |
| Your text on each order (plus SizeOps' tag) | Blank | Your own note on each order. SizeOps always adds its tag after it; about 19 characters of yours fit. |
- Manual trades and other EAs' trades are never touched, but they do count toward Daily P&L, Win / Loss and the daily limit.
- NT8 has no group 14. It names its orders SO E (entry), SO SL, SO TP and SO P (partials), each with # and a short trade id, plus SO Close, so you can spot them in NinjaTrader's Orders tab.
15–17. Colours
Colours (MT: first line of group 15. NT8: the Theme setting, group 13)
- Auto (default): the SizeOps look, but a part you changed keeps your settings. Three parts are judged on their own: the line colours (group 15), the panel and button colours (groups 16–17) and the Font (group 13). A chart that kept the old default colours gets the whole SizeOps look. The Experts log says which part kept yours.
- SizeOps: the SizeOps look. The line colours follow your chart: bright on a dark chart, deeper on a white one, so every line and label stays readable. Buttons and words in Segoe UI, numbers in Consolas, titles in Bahnschrift.
- Cool blue: navy panel, cyan and orange lines, with the Font setting (NT8: your NinjaTrader skin with cyan and orange lines).
- Custom: the colours in groups 15–17, exactly as you set them, with the Font setting.
The colours in groups 15–17 (the chart lines, the panel and the buttons) are used with Custom, and by Auto for a part you changed. Their defaults are the SizeOps colours for a dark chart. NT8: with Auto or a skin theme, the line colours follow the same Auto rule; Custom uses them exactly.
Messages you may see
A refusal flashes on the button for a few seconds; on a half or third button it takes the whole row (click it to close it early). Words too long for their button show a little smaller, never cut. The full reason goes to the platform's log (MT: Experts tab; NT8: NinjaScript Output). Alerts also pop up. NT8 shows messages about a running trade on the line under the panel, so you see them with the panel folded. Words that changed recently show the old word in brackets.
When you press EXECUTE
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| NO ACCOUNT (NT8) | The account from the settings isn't connected, or there's no account at all. | Connect it, or pick another in group 1. |
| TRADING IS OFF (MT) (was TRADING OFF) | Algo Trading is off (MT4: AutoTrading), SizeOps' own "Allow Algo Trading" tick is off, the login is read-only, or the broker doesn't allow EAs. The log says which. | Turn it on, tick it (F7, Common tab), log in with your trading password, or ask your broker. |
| NO STOP LINE (MT) (was NO SL LINE) | The stop line was missing. A new one appears with the next price. | Check where it sits before you EXECUTE. |
| NO PRICE YET (was NO SL LINE) | No prices yet for this symbol. | Try again in a moment. |
| STOP TOO CLOSE (was SL TOO CLOSE) | The stop is on the entry, too close to it, at or past the price (market orders), or inside the broker's minimum distance. | Drag the stop further away. |
| STOP WRONG SIDE / TARGET WRONG SIDE (was SL / TP WRONG SIDE) | A line is on the wrong side of the entry. | Drag it across, or check Buy or sell (group 5). |
| TARGET TOO CLOSE (was TP TOO CLOSE) | The target is too close to the price for your broker. | Raise R:R or drag the target further. |
| ENTRY TOO CLOSE | The pending entry is too close to the price. | Drag it further, or use MARKET. |
| RISK TOO SMALL (was RISK TOO LOW) | Even the smallest size would lose more than your risk (% or $) at this stop. | Move the stop closer, raise your risk, or skip this one. |
| NO SYMBOL DATA (MT) (was RISK TOO LOW) | MetaTrader hasn't sent this symbol's contract details yet. | Wait a moment, or open the symbol in Market Watch. |
| NO RISK AMOUNT (MT) (was RISK TOO LOW) | Your risk works out to $0 (balance or equity reads 0). | Check the account, or use Risk in $. |
| MARGIN TOO LOW (was NOT ENOUGH MARGIN) | The size needs more margin than you have free, or not even the smallest size fits. The log shows what it needs. | Use a smaller risk, close a trade, or turn on "Not enough margin: trade smaller" if it's off. |
| NO FREE MARGIN (NT8) (was ZERO MARGIN) | Your free margin is used up. | Wait until some frees up. |
| MAX POSITION HIT (NT8) | NinjaTrader's max position size is used up. | Close some, or raise the limit in NinjaTrader. |
| OTHER SIDE OPEN (NT8, MT5 netting) | A trade the other way is open (or a SizeOps entry the other way is waiting) on this instrument, and the account keeps one position per symbol. | To trade the other way, close or cancel it first. |
| MANUAL TRADE OPEN (MT5 netting) (was MANUAL POSITION) | This symbol's position has a trade SizeOps didn't make (by hand or another EA), and the account keeps one position per symbol. | Finish that position first, or trade another symbol. |
| CHECKING… (MT5 netting) (was CHECKING POSITION) | SizeOps is still reading this symbol's position from MetaTrader. | Try again in a second. |
| WAIT A MOMENT (MT) | MetaTrader still doesn't list your last trade, 3 s after the broker took it (a slow terminal or connection). Its partial levels and BE line wait for it. | Wait a moment and press EXECUTE again. |
| DONE FOR TODAY (was DAILY LIMIT HIT) | Your daily loss limit is used up. SizeOps' own waiting entries on this symbol were cancelled. | Go for a walk. New trades open again after broker midnight (NT8: 18:00 New York). |
| OVER TODAY'S LIMIT (was OVER DAILY LIMIT) | This trade could lose more at its stop than what's left of today's limit. | Use a smaller risk, or call it a day. |
| CHECK LICENSE (was LICENSE PROBLEM) | The license isn't OK; new trades are blocked. | See License below and group 1, or email support@sizeops.com. |
| ORDER FAILED / ENTRY REJECTED (NT8) | NinjaTrader couldn't send the entry, or the broker rejected it. Nothing was opened. | Check the log for the reason. |
In a trade
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| TOO SMALL TO SPLIT (was TOO SMALL) | That quick-close share is below the smallest size for some trades; those stay as they are. | Use CLOSE, or the bigger quick-close button. |
| NOT OPEN YET (NT8) (was NO OPEN TRADE) | The picked trade's entry is still waiting. | Wait for the fill, or pick another trade. |
| NOTHING OPEN (NT8) | No contracts left (closed outside SizeOps?). | SizeOps catches up in a moment. |
| CLOSE REJECTED / CLOSE FAILED (NT8) | The broker rejected the close, or NinjaTrader couldn't send it. The contracts are still open. | Try again, or close it in NinjaTrader. |
| NO ROOM | There's no space for another partial before the target. | Move the target further out, or move a level. |
| ALL 30 USED (MT) | All 30 partial slots are in use across your trades. | Remove a level you don't need. |
| TOO SMALL (was LOT LOW / CT LOW) | That partial level would close less than the smallest size. NT8 says BEYOND TP, BELOW ENTRY or ABOVE ENTRY when that's the reason instead. | Raise its % or remove it. |
| BETWEEN ENTRY & TP (NT8) (was TP / ENTRY) | A partial stays between the entry and the target. | Move it inside. |
| NOT IN PROFIT YET (was NO PROFIT YET) | Price isn't far enough past entry + costs for the broker to accept that stop. | Try again a bit later. An active BE line keeps trying. |
| ALREADY AT BE | Every stop is already at breakeven or better. | Nothing to do. |
| NO OPEN TRADE (was NO TRADE) | BE NOW was pressed with no open trade. | Nothing to do. |
| NO TRADE / NO STOP DISTANCE / 8 BE LINES MAX (MT) (was NO TRADE) | BE LINE needs a trade or a waiting entry; SizeOps doesn't know this trade's starting stop; or 8 BE lines are already out (MT). | Pick a trade, use BE NOW instead, or remove a BE line. |
| NO BE LINE YET (was LINE OFF) | ACTIVATE was pressed with no BE line. | Press BE LINE first. |
| ENTRIES CANCELLED (MT; NT8 on the line under the panel) | A waiting entry no longer fits what's left of today's limit, so SizeOps' waiting entries on this symbol were cancelled. | Check the log; plan a smaller trade. |
Alerts
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| TRADE HAS NO STOP (MT4) / STOP REJECTED (NT8) | The broker refused the stop; the trade is open without one. NT8 keeps it on the line under the panel until the trade has a stop. | Set a stop yourself now. |
| TARGET REJECTED (NT8) | The broker refused the target; the trade has no take-profit. | Set one in NinjaTrader if you want one. |
| EXIT ORDER FAILED (NT8) (was STOP FAILED) | NinjaTrader couldn't send or resize the stop, target or partial orders. | Check the trade's stop and target in NinjaTrader. |
| Your broker didn't take the order (MT) (was order failed) | The broker refused the order. | Check the log for the broker's reason. |
| CLOSE didn't go through… You're still in the market (MT) (was … refused – YOU ARE STILL IN THE MARKET) | A close was refused; trades are still open. If only pending orders are left, the alert says so instead. | Press CLOSE again, or check the Trade tab. |
| … your broker is still working on the close / cancel / breakeven | An order hasn't been confirmed after 10 s. | Check the trade in the platform. |
| … partial piece(s) didn't open (MT) (was SPLIT incomplete) | Some partial pieces didn't open, so the trade is smaller than planned. Those levels close at the touch instead. | Keep MetaTrader running; check the position. |
| Your last trade didn't show in MetaTrader's lists for 30 s (MT) | MetaTrader didn't list the trade for 30 s, so SizeOps removed its partial levels and BE line (they would act on your other trades). Its stop and target are still set. | Check the Trade tab; if the trade is there, set its levels and BE line again. |
| Some settings need a fix, so SizeOps didn't start (MT) (was invalid inputs – EA not started) | A setting is out of range (quick-close 0 or 100, say). | Fix the setting and press OK. |
| After a SizeOps close your account is n contract(s) … the other way (NT8) (was Over-closed) | After a SizeOps close, the account holds contracts the other way (a close and a stop filled together, say). SizeOps doesn't flatten it. | Check the position in NinjaTrader and flatten it. |
| Your … position now has a trade SizeOps didn't make (MT5 netting) | A trade by hand (or another EA) was added to a SizeOps position or flipped it, so SizeOps stopped managing it. | Manage that position yourself and check its stop and target. |
| A SizeOps order filled into your … position (MT5 netting) | A SizeOps entry filled into a position you opened, so the two merged. | Check that position's stop and target now. |
License
The words come from sizeops.com, except Invalid key and the ones SizeOps writes itself (Account not on license, which names the exact account it checked in with, and Trial ended / License ended / Emergency pass ended when a pass runs out). MT shows the reason in short under CHECK LICENSE (License paused, Trial ended, License ended, Not on your key yet, Account not on license, Key replaced, Trial already used, Invalid key), the whole text when you hover the panel title, in the Experts tab and in a pop-up; NT8 on the line under the panel, in an alert and in the NinjaScript Output. New trades are blocked; open trades are still managed. After the ones marked ↻, SizeOps checks again every 15 minutes (hourly after a day), so fixing it on sizeops.com unblocks it with no click.

| License paused. Pay on sizeops.com to continue. ↻ | A payment didn't go through. After a chargeback: License paused – check your email. | Pay on sizeops.com: OK within 15 minutes, same key and accounts. |
| Trial ended. Keep going on sizeops.com. ↻ | The trial is over. At the end of its last day (broker time; NT8: market-data time) SizeOps first says Trial ended itself; the site's words follow within a few hours. | Pick a Monthly or Yearly license on sizeops.com: OK within 15 minutes, no new key. |
| License ended. See your account on sizeops.com. ↻ | The license was refunded or has ended. | See your account page; buying again unblocks it within 15 minutes. |

| WebRequest blocked – allow https://sizeops.com in Tools > Options > Experts (MT; MT4: Expert Advisors) | MetaTrader doesn't let SizeOps reach sizeops.com. With a license saved: … OK until {date}, and new trades stay allowed until then. | Add https://sizeops.com to the WebRequest list there, then CHECK LICENSE (or put SizeOps on the chart again). |
Journal
SizeOps sends your trades to the Journal on sizeops.com. It all happens in the background: trading works exactly the same, and there's nothing to set in SizeOps.
- The switches are on sizeops.com: Journal settings › your trading account: Journal and Save chart pictures, both on by default. SizeOps learns them when it checks your license (at start, once a day, or when you press CHECK LICENSE) and with every send. Hover the panel title: it says Journal on.
- Switched off, SizeOps does nothing for it: Journal off: nothing is recorded, sent or kept on your PC (what was waiting is deleted). Save chart pictures off: no pictures.
- License paused or ended: SizeOps records and sends nothing for the Journal. What was already waiting stays on your PC and goes once your license is active again.
- What goes: for every trade placed with SizeOps while the Journal is on, your plan at EXECUTE (risk, stop, target, partials, BE line), what happened (stop and target moves, partials, BE, the exit), how far price went for and against you, and the money from your broker (profit, commission, swap, fees). Also your balance at EXECUTE and after each close, how your daily limit stood, and who did each step (your SizeOps level, a SizeOps button, the broker, or you in the platform). MT4 / MT5 also send your deposits, withdrawals and credit since the Journal went on, and your account's totals so the Journal can check it matches your broker. Your other trades on the account go too, without a plan.
- What-ifs from your platform's price history: after a trade closes, SizeOps reads your platform's own price history (up to 5 trading days) to estimate what would have happened if you'd left it, held it to the target, or let the plan run untouched. They're always shown as estimates and never change the trade's real result. It runs in the background, a little at a time.
- From the moment it's on: nothing from before goes, not even trades SizeOps placed earlier. Other trades count from when the Journal went on.
- After the terminal was off: SizeOps catches up from your account history since it last sent, never from before the Journal went on. Trades of yours that closed meanwhile (stop or target at the broker) go with their plan.
- MT4 catches up only what the Account History tab shows: keep it on a period that includes those days (or All history). - NT8 can only read today's session, so other trades from earlier days aren't sent.
- Chart pictures: at entry, each partial (also a part you close yourself: 25 % / 50 % or in the platform), BE and the exit (however it closes): the chart exactly as it is. MT: the whole chart, the SizeOps panel included. NT8: NinjaTrader's own chart picture (the one Share uses), as it comes: Chart Trader is in it when it's open, with your account and position (keep it closed for a clean picture); a window over the chart is never in it. SizeOps saves and sends the picture as it is, at your chart's size (nothing is resized on your PC); sizeops.com shows a tall one at most 1080 px high, keeping its shape (a 3840 x 2160 chart becomes 1920 x 1080), nothing cut. NT8: the entry picture waits until the trade's stop and target are on the chart (a limit: the waiting entry and its planned lines), 2 s at most. A minimised chart gets no picture for that moment (NT8: also a chart tab that isn't in front, or a picture that comes out blank). On MT5, another visible SizeOps chart on that symbol takes it instead. MT4 can't tell a minimised chart, so it takes the picture anyway. MT with SizeOps on several charts of one symbol: each picture comes from the chart you clicked for that step (EXECUTE, a partial, CLOSE, BE); a step that happens by itself (TP, SL, a partial level, BE by itself) comes from the chart you clicked last.
- When: right after each step of a trade: the fill, each partial, BE and the exit. The Journal shows the trade while it's open and updates it at each step; at the exit it gets the money from your broker. Each step's picture goes right after it. Never in the middle of a click or a drag: it goes the moment you let go. MT: a send holds SizeOps on that chart for a moment (usually a fraction of a second, 1 second at most); the platform and your stop and target at the broker aren't affected. NT8 sends in the background. MT: a big picture that doesn't go in 1 second goes in small pieces, one at a time, with SizeOps doing its normal work in between (after a dropped line or a restart it carries on). Your trades always go first and never wait for a picture. Offline? It waits on your PC and goes as soon as the platform is connected again (or at the next start). With several charts, one sends at a time and all wait the same.
- Your PC stays light: each trade is kept only until sizeops.com has it, then deleted. What's waiting is capped at 200 MB. It's in the terminal's MQL4 / MQL5\Files\SizeOps_journal folder (NT8: Documents\NinjaTrader 8\SizeOps\journal).
- Sending keeps failing? One line an hour at most in the Experts tab (NT8: NinjaScript Output): Can't send your journal to sizeops.com right now (…). Your trades wait on this PC and go later.
